Ludington

Let’s start with Ludington, the larger of these two picturesque towns. It offers a diverse range of attractions that cater to every interest, including history, dining, shopping, and adventure.

1. Ludington State Park

One of the most beautiful state parks in Michigan, Ludington has five and a half miles of beach front! Several of these miles include stunning sand dunes. The state park offers trails for hiking and biking, and plenty of space for camping.  You will definitely want to visit this state park while you’re in Ludington. If you are interested in camping, you’ll need to book your reservations early, when the reservation window opens at the start of the year.

2. Big Sable Point Lighthouse

This lighthouse in Ludington originates in 1867. You can access this lighthouse by a scenic hike or by taking a shuttle from within the state park. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape, and browse the gift shop for unique souvenirs.

3. Port of Ludington Maritime Museum

Opened in 2017, Port of Ludington Maritime Museum is a captivating attraction that brings Lake Michigan’s maritime history to life. Engage with interactive exhibits, examine original artifacts, and delve into the stories of the sailors, shipbuilders, and fishermen who shaped the region.

4. Keeper’s Fish Shack

This casual take-out only restaurant has delicious fish, some for the best I’ve ever had. You can choose between lake perch, white fish, walleye, grouper, and mahi mahi. I love that they offer options for how you’d like the fish prepared: blackened, grilled, or deep fried. Most menu items come with french fries and coleslaw. I highly recommend checking this place out! Note that it is not open during the winter months.

5. Walk Downtown Ludington

Stroll along Ludington’s charming downtown streets, where you’ll discover an eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and specialty shops. From unique gifts and souvenirs to handcrafted goods and local artwork, there’s something for everyone. One of my favorite hidden stores is Lotus of Ludington, a gift shop and yoga studio.

6. Historic White Pine Village

Immerse yourself in the 19th century at Historic White Pine Village, a meticulously recreated pioneer town. Explore original buildings, including a courthouse, a general store, and a blacksmith shop, and learn about the lives of the early settlers who shaped the region.

The village hosts living history demonstrations and special events throughout the season, providing a truly immersive experience.

7. S.S. Badger

The S.S. Badger is a carferry that travels from Ludington Michigan to Manitowoc Wisconsin. Even if you don’t take the crossing, watching the Badger arrive and depart from the Ludington harbor is a sight to behold.

8. Green Isaac’s Coffee

Start your day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee at Green Isaac’s, a local favorite known for its warm and inviting atmosphere. Relax on the patio and soak up the peaceful ambiance of this charming cafe.

9. Painted Frog Art Studio

If you’re looking for a fun, unique activity, check out Painted Frog Art Studio. This store offers specialty gift items, art supplies, and hosts a variety of art classes.

10. Shopping

Pentwater’s main street is lined with unique boutiques. From clothing, to home decor, to art, there is a large variety of shops to explore. Some of my favorite stores include Birch Michigan & Pentwater Candle Company and CRAZE.

11. Walk the Pier

Walk out on the Pentwater pier, and watch the boats enter and exit Pentwater lake. Near the pier, you’ll find a small grocery store. Consider packing up a light picnic and watching the sunset.

Planning your trip:

  • I recommend visiting these coastal towns during the summer months (June-September) for optimal weather. Everything will be open for the season during these months.
  • If you plan to stay in these towns for longer than a day, consider staying in a local bed and breakfast.
  • Each town is very walkable and there is plenty of parking available when driving between them.

Ludington and Pentwater offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and small-town hospitality. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of local culture, these lakeshore gems have something for everyone.
