Planning a trip to Grand Rapids is super exciting! If you’re anything like me, you’re here because you love to research and plan your trip ahead of time. As a Michigander and native of Grand Rapids, I am giving you some of the best things to do in this cool city in the fall.
You are going to learn about things to do like apple orchards, corn mazes, haunted houses, and hiking trails. After learning about these places, you are going to be ready for your next Michigan travel adventure!

Apple Orchards
Located on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, Robinette’s is a fall staple in the city. They are known for their donuts, apples, and wine. While waiting in line for donuts, consider taking a photo with the large apple out front! If you’re looking for a unique fall activity, check out their winery. They offer affordable wine tastings. If you live nearby, consider keeping your glass, because future wine tastings are free when you bring in the Robinette’s tasting glass!
One of my personal favorite apple orchards is Ed Dunneback & Girls Farm. They have a great selection of donuts and other fun fall treats. I love that they have plenty of outdoor seating on the patio. For apples, you can purchase them in the store or pick them yourself.
Post Family Farm is a great apple orchard for the whole family. They have a lot of fun fall activities for kids like a pumpkin train ride, giant tube slides, and a ninja course! They also have friendly farm animals that the kids can meet and greet.
I grew up getting apples from Blok Orchard. They are a small orchard growing several different fruits and vegetables throughout the season. If you are looking to pick your own, or just purchase some fall produce staples like apples, pumpkins, and squash, definitely check this place out.
Another great family friendly apple orchard is Schwallier’s Country Basket. They are located on the northwest side of Grand Rapids and offer a lot of kid friendly activities as well as farm animals. This apple orchard also offers u-pick apples.
Corn Mazes
Some of the apple orchards listed above also have corn mazes. Aside from those, these are some other well known corn mazes in the area.
Located in Alto, Deep Roots Produce has a huge corn maze! The maze is about 10 acres and includes 3 trails of varying levels of difficulty. They recommend planning for 60-90 minutes to complete the maze. Afterward, check out their petting zoo!
Fruit Ridge Hayrides claims to have the most challenging corn maze in West Michigan! Designed by Dave Phillips, a popular designer of maze books and corn mazes, there is a new, fun design each year. Note that they are only open only on weekends. They offer a lot of other fun fall activities too like horse drawn hayrides, u-pick pumpkins, pony rides, and a petting zoo.
Heidi’s Farmstand and Bakery offers both a junior and adult corn maze. After surviving the maze, enjoy some of their freshly baked goods like donuts, pies, cookies, and muffins.
Another farm in Lowell, Olin Farms has an affordable corn maze at just $7 per adult, $5 per child. This smaller farm also has hayrides and pumpkins.
Apple Valley Fun Farm and Corn Maze is in Sparta and has a 5 acre corn maze for the whole family. They also have donuts, cider, pumpkins, and a lot of kid friendly activities.
Haunted Houses
If you’re looking for something a bit scarier than a corn maze, check out some of these haunted houses!
The Haunt has been scaring people in Grand Rapids for over 20 years! Located in Wyoming, this is a seriously scary haunted house. Each year they come up with a new, spooky theme. Children under 15 years old must have an adult in their group. This place gets very busy so plan to go on a weeknight if possible or plan to arrive early. This haunted house is entirely indoors and it can get hot, so dress accordingly.
Witches of New Salem has two outdoor scary trails within the woods! The theme is based around witches, ghouls, and patients escaped from the mental hospital. They also offer a haunted corn maze. If you’re looking for something a little less scary, they offer daytime activities as well.
Abandoned Acres Farm Haunted House has two haunted corn mazes. One is a traditional haunted corn maze, and the other has 3D visuals and includes wearing 3D glasses.
Markets
If you are interested in doing some fall shopping, check out these seasonal markets.
Fulton Street Farmers Market has been an essential part of Grand Rapids for 100 years! Hours of operation during the main season are May 7 to October 29, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 8:00am-2:00pm. A variety of vendors offer fresh, local produce and handmade items.
Although The Found Cottage Mercantile Market is located in Holland, this is still a great experience for the fall. With several vendors offering a variety of goods like antiques, home decor, candles, handmade items, and more, there is something for everyone. This market is so much fun and you can easily spend a whole day here.
Fall on Fulton is a local street market and festival that is new to the fall season. It encourages people to come out and support small businesses in the Fulton Street area.
Hiking Trails & Parks
I love getting into hiking and walking in the fall because of the cooler temperatures and the beautiful fall foliage.
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is one of the nation’s premier horticultural display gardens and sculpture parks. In the fall, consider walking through the outdoor sculpture park. The farmhouse area typically has fun fall themed activities like s’mores making and
On the west side of Grand Rapids you’ll find Blandford Nature Center. This is a welcoming nature preserve that has several walking trails as well as an indoor nature center where some rescued animals can be viewed. They offer several different family activities throughout the year, check out their website and activity calendar for special fall activities.
If you are interested in walking, running, hiking, biking in autumn beauty, consider visiting one of these parks: Provin Trails, Seidman Park, Huff Park, and Millenium Park. All of these parks have designated trails and are open year round.
